State Bar of CaliforniaThe State Bar of California certifies attorneys as specialists in certain areas of law through its MCLE Legal Specialization Program. Education activitiesapproved for California legal specialization credit automaticallyqualify for California MCLE credit. Attorneys who want to become certified must complete 45 hours of education in their specialty field during the three years prior to applying for certification. Those already certified must complete 60 hours of education every five years in order to maintain their certification. When an education activity is approved for legal specialization, it means that attorneys participating in that activity can use it to comply with the program's education requirements.


To be eligible for certification, an attorney must have been engaged in the practice of law in the area in which certification is sought for a minimum of 25 percent of the time the attorney has spent in occupational endeavors during the previous five years.

The following U.S. and foreign jurisdictions have MCLE requirements which meet standards adopted by the State Bar of California:

Alabama, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Maine, Oregon, Arizona, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Mississippi, Rhode Island, Delaware, Missouri, South Carolina, England and Wales, Montana, Tennessee, Florida, Nevada, Texas, Georgia, New Hampshire, Utah, Hong Kong, New Jersey, Vermont, Idaho, New Mexico, Virginia, Illinois, New York, Washington, Iowa, North Carolina, West Virginia, Indiana, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Kansas, Ohio, Wyoming, Kentucky,Victoria, Australia and U.S. Virgin Islands.
